Receptacle of the male hand
So, if Scully is pregnant, which she is, and if she brings the baby to term, which she does, why the nativity scene, if it was all done by hand? Unless Mulder read Playboy for its erudite essays instead of just looking at the pictures?
Needless to say, we are into a stretch of the X Files for which I have little appreciation. I just hated that they turned the greatest female character in TV history into nothing more than a baby carrier.
Don’t get me wrong. Please.
Of course, having babies is an important part of being a woman. But, like who one chooses to have sex with, it shouldn’t be an individual’s defining moment.
I welcome Stefano Gabbana’s recent plea not to be seen as gay – “I don’t want to be called ‘gay’, because I’m simply a man ... full stop.” Of course, he’s a man! What more excuse does he need?
Sex has so come to dominate our world that one of our greatest designers, a man who has impacted our world through his creativity, is seen only according to his bed partner. It is pitiful!
Having only, so far, seen the trailers for the upcoming eleventh season of the X Files, I see there’s a need to find William, the son Scully had to give up and, almost immediately afterwards, she is, yet again (oh, um) in hospital. By now, we have to seriously begin to ask ourselves, why Chris Carter, after creating one of the strongest female characters in TV history, needs, on a fairly regular basis, to make her helpless.
It is time that we stopped seeing ourselves and others only in terms of biological needs. So what if he has sex with other men or she with other women? Really? Is that all that makes a person interesting? Why the hell does it matter? Yes, it did once. But the fight has been fought and those who choose to live life a little differently need to realise that it’s time to move on and no special privileges are due just because of who you choose to share your bed with. Homosexual may be the new heterosexual but life demands the same shit!
As a Catholic, it strikes me as kind of funny to say that life isn’t about sex – but, really, it isn’t!
And, therefore, I find it kind of funny that Scully’s pregnancy works out the way that it does. Despite the fact that I regret Scully being reduced to nothing more than a baby carrier.
There is a need to tell stories about every aspect of life and giving birth is such an important part of that narrative it shouldn’t go ignored. It just isn’t a story that Dana Scully should have been reduced to. She had such a great impact on our cultural consciousness, a woman who didn’t whimper at her master’s voice, who stood her ground despite her world being defined by the males around her.
That Scully was reduced to little more than the carrier of her male child is insulting to all that she had been before. It is almost like the show simply didn’t know what to do with her. What can we do with a female character? Give her a baby! And a baby that she would, because her character couldn’t sustain it, give up! Ridiculous!
Even more demeaning, the sperm was donated ‘by hand’.
Maybe we should just accept that, because of her creator, the female character will always be subject to the whims of her biology. It just seems pathetic that the first strong female character, who set the tone for much that was to come after her, should be little more than the receptacle of the male hand.
