Anywhere but under the bed!
Rehabilitation is possible. Sometimes, at least.
There are good reasons to bring a monster-of-the-week back. 'Tooms' was a successful return after 'Squeeze' of the MotW that first caught the public's attention and helped eventually to make the X Files become its own kind of monster.
Eugene Victor Tooms returns as Aaron Monte recommends him for release so he can "rejoin the community". What Monte is blithely unaware of is that Tooms cannot rejoin what he had never been a part of. However pathetic he comes across, Aaron Monte is not entirely fictional, as Lord Longford's relationship with Moors Murderer, Myra Hindley proves.
There are people who gain access to inmates who should never be allowed through the prison gates!
A female teacher, with a voice like finger nails down a blackboard, with whom I worked for a short while, lost her job after she and an inmate were found in the cleaner's cupboard, she with her knickers round her ankles.
Prison inmates can be very seductive.
Linda Bowman's attraction to Robert Patrick Modell is a well enough known phenomenon. Genetic sexual attraction is the form of incest that occurs when a reunion between long-lost siblings - and even between a parent and an off-spring - is consummated either knowingly or otherwise.
To say Modell is seductive would be an understatement. This is a man who, with nothing but his voice, can 'push' otherwise perfectly sane and rational people into setting themselves on fire. Little wonder that his long-lost sister found him worthy of revenge.
Whoever was working with him inside did a remarkable job. Defeated by life and the illness that is killing him, Modell retains his power to 'push' others according to his will. Yet, after he "simply walked out the front door", Modell, though presented with every opportunity, kills no one. Not even a single police officer, though, in 'Pusher', he seemed to take particular delight in killing police officers.
What a fine example of the work accomplished by those who know with whom they are dealing. Rehabilitation can only happen when the inmate genuinely wishes to change his/her life and only when dealing with a practitioner not enamoured by their seductiveness.
Aaron Monte had no hope of rehabilitating Eugene Victor Tooms because he was working from the belief that there is a shred of goodness in everyone. Inmates can see such fools approaching from behind a locked door.
We only ever see the physiotherapist working with Modell. The implication is that he is receiving quality care. Such is the care that even his sister, whose ultimate designs are thwarted by the advanced state of Modell's illness, cannot 'push' him to re-offend beyond his actual escape.
'Kitsunegari' is not as glorious an end for Modell as 'Tooms' had been for Eugene. It is, however, a testament to those who work unheralded to protect society from the monster who lives anywhere but under the bed.
