The Value of Life?
Life is the greatest gift. Unless it's a burden.
Our perception of ourselves must be tempered by our attitude to life itself!
We claim to value all human life and yet dispense with it when it becomes inconvenient. We philosophize about the value of all human life, yet hold some more valued than others. The great American experiment claims that all life is equal while reality is patently very different!
We are hypocrites!
The old lady, at the beginning of 'Terma', must sneak out in the midst of night to end a life which to her is unbearable, yet younger women can walk into a clinic and terminate a life as a right. There is nothing more telling of the human condition in the modern world than our values of life. Plural because there is no single value that holds. Life, like all things human, is up for dispute.
We cannot, in all honesty, say we value life if we allow the holocaust of the unborn, or insist on keeping alive those who would be better off dead.
There is no justification of value if that most essential quality is decided by some sliding scale that heaves one way today and another tomorrow. Life is not Roe vs. Wade. Life either is valuable or it isn't. We actually hold minerals as far more valuable than human life - the price of gold will rise and fall but it always remains valuable. Human life, by comparison, is cheap.
If we cannot value life itself, this amazing thing that was bestowed upon us, whether by God or happenstance really makes no difference, then we must hold ourselves in contempt. Truth be told, we probably do, which is why we reap such harm upon ourselves, others and the world that bears us.
We inflict death upon so many who do not desire or deserve it and withhold death from those who wish it. There is nothing more condemning of human nature than our attitude to death. It is hypocritical and humiliating.
We are standing on the brink of nuclear war and even the Liberal news media are discussing the possible acceptable deaths that will result. We have learned nothing! Thousands of years of human history come down to two bellicose males wanting to throw their toys from the pram.
Pathetic!
